How This Plan Works

Without cornerstones, short vertical sash pieces sit between blocks and long horizontal rows join them. With cornerstones, sash pieces and squares are sewn together into each horizontal row; cornerstones are not layered on top.

View assumptions
  • Cut widths and unfinished block lengths include ¼" seam allowances.
  • Long no-cornerstone rows use straight end-to-end WOF joins, with ½" lost per join.
  • Yardage is a conservative, quarter-yard strip estimate. Leftover pieces are not reused in the calculation.

FAQ

Internal sashing is the fabric between blocks and block rows. This calculator does not add a sashing border around the outside of the quilt.

A quarter-inch seam is sewn on each side. A 12-inch finished block is therefore cut and handled as a 12½-inch unfinished block edge.

No. Choose them only if you want small squares where the internal sashings intersect. Without cornerstones, the calculator uses long horizontal sashing rows.
